Answer by bucky(2189) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Given:
.
5 • 4 ÷ 2 – 42
.
If you have written the problem correctly, the correct answer is not in your list of choices.
.
The correct answer is -32 and this is the way you do things in a string is to go through
it from left to right doing the multiplications and divisions as you encounter them and
skipping over the additions and subtractions. Once you complete the multiplications and
divisions, then you go back and from left to right you do the additions and subtractions
as you encounter them.
.
So in this problem you begin with the 5 and then you multiply by 4 to get 20. Then you
divide the 20 by 2 to get 10. Now the problem is 10 - 42 and since there are no more multiplications
or additions, you next go from left to right and do the additions and subtractions to
get:
.
10 - 42 = -32
.
So the answer to the problem as you wrote it is -32. Did you miss a sign or leave out
some term, or ... ????? If you missed something, please repost the problem.
