Question 873212: The cost of a matinee is $4. The cost of an evening show is $9. If Tony went to see a total of
18 movies and spent $142.00, how many day (matinee) movies did he attend?
Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x= number of matinee movies
y= number of evening shows
1 x + 1 y = 18 .............1
4 x + 9 y = 142 .............2
Eliminate y
multiply (1)by -9
Multiply (2) by 1
-9 x -9 y = -162
4 x + 9 y = 142
Add the two equations
-5 x = -20
/ -5
x = 4
plug value of x in (1)
1 x + 1 y = 18
4 + y = 18
y = 18 -4
y = 14
y = 14
x= 4 number of matinee movies
y= 14 number of evening shows
