Question 871866: Can you please help me with finding the unkown x and y. (There is 2 in each question) Thanks.
1) 2 angles add to 90 degrees. The larger angle is 12 degrees more then five times the measure of the smaller angle.
2) Ellie is twice as old as her sister Kate. In seven years the sum of their ages will be 20.
3) Keith thinks of two numbers. When he adds the two numbers he gets eight. When he doubles the first number and takes away the treble the second number he gets 1.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(1):
x and y, the angle measures.
Description becomes translated to these:

highlight%28x%2By=90%29, and highlight%28y=12%2B5x%29, and this is using x

(2):
Let x and y be Ellie and Kay age now.
IN SEVEN YEARS, your description becomes %28x%2B7%29%2B%28y%2B7%29=20; and your first part is, for "now", highlight%28x=2y%29.
The age sum equation is simplifiable to x+y=20-14, or highlight%28x%2By=6%29. You should be able to see how to solve this now that two equations in two unknowns are formed.
