Question 869370: Please help me find the equation within this word problem:
"Two large apples together weighed 64 ounces.
If the weight of the smaller apple had been 13 ounces less,
it would have been 1/2 of the weight of the larger one.
Find the weight of each apple."
I've tried to solve it already. I have no idea what I'm doing and I hate making a mess on my paper. I'm also scared of getting it wrong, so it's hard for me to write a random equation out and try to see if it would work. I've attempted to try that, but it turned out horribly and I had no idea what I was doing. My mom helped me a little, but the farthest I've gotten with that was 'splitting the two apples into a table and labeling them 'apple one and apple two' and underneath the 'apple one' was 'x' and underneath the 'apple two' was '64-x'. Please help me, I have no idea how to find these equations within the word problems and in my book it tells you how to do it but not too well. I'm completely lost. Please help me.

"Two large apples together weighed 64 ounces.
If the weight of the smaller apple had been 13 ounces less,
it would have been 1/2 of the weight of the larger one.
Find the weight of each apple."
let the small apple be x
the larger one will be 64-x
if smaller had been 13 ounces less
ie: x-13
it would be 1/2(64-x)
multiply equation by 2
2(x-13)=64-x
2x-26=64-x
2x+x=64+26
3x=90
/3
x=30
smaller apple 30 ounces
larger 64-30=34 ounces
Check
30-13=17
1/2 of 34 = 17
Now you may eat the apples!!!!
