Question 853324: A restaurant has a special deal for large groups who order a banquet from a set menu. The pricing for the set menu is calculated by taking a fixed cost for overheads (rent,cutlery etc.) and a cost per person. A party of 12 people will pay a total of $540 and a party of 20 people will pay $700.
Find the fixed cost and cost per person charged by the restaurant.

Let Fixed cost be x
and charge per head be y
x+12y=540
x+20y=700
subtract the equations
8y=160
y=160/8
y=20, charge per head
x+12y=540
x+12(20)=540
x=540 -240
x= 300, the fixed charge
