Question 843545: I cannot get a grasp of the formulas for some word problems. If Sam is takes a typing test that lasted 15 minutes and typed 84 wpm, what was his total words typed? I got that part, which is 84/15 = 1260 words. The second part is where I get confused. The only information is that Sam took an oral test and typed 72 wpm. The questions are what is the length of the oral test and what is the typing rate for the entire test. Not sure how to go about answering those questions.

Hi,
If Sam is takes a typing test that lasted 15 minutes and typed 84 wpm, what was his total words typed? 84•15 = 1260 words.
Oral test involved typing at 72wpmin (how much time did that take?
| Cross Multiplying to solve
x = 12.9 min (rounded to nearest tenth)
Total test 15min + 12.9min = 27.9min
