Let A be the larger number
Let B be the smaller number
You're given the following information in the question:
A + B = 48
B = 1/5A (or, more useful, A = 5B)
.
Substitute the value of A in the first equation to get:
(5B) + B = 48
Add the Bs
6B = 48
Divide by 6
B = 8
.
If B is 8 and we know that A+B=48, then A must be 40
