Let number of dogs be "d" ; Let number of cats be "c"
EQUATIONS:
d + c = 1216
2d+c+420 = 2024
---------
c=1216-d
Substitute to get:
2d+1216-d+420=2024
d = 388 dogs
c=1216-d = 828 cats
