Question 768970: I'm suppose to write two equations and solve by elimination.
Two trains start from towns 273 miles apart and travel toward each other on parallel tracks. They pass each other 3.5 hours later. If on train travels 14 mph faster than the other, find the speed of each train.(solve by elimination)
This is the answer that I turned in and got wrong:
x+y=273
3.5x+49y=273
y=15, x=64
Train x is going 64 mph and train y is going 78mph

Two trains start from towns 273 miles apart and travel toward each other on parallel tracks. They pass each other 3.5 hours later. If on train travels 14 mph faster than the other, find the speed of each train.
***
let x=speed of faster train
let y=speed of slower train
distance = speed*travel time
..
x-y=14
3.5x+3.5y=273
..
3.5x-3.5y=49
3.5x+3.5y=273
add
7x=322
x=46
y=x-14=32
speed of faster train=46 mph
speed of slower train=32 mph
