Question 762494: I need to know if I'm setting this word problem up right before I can use the equations to graph it. This is the assignment we had to create a real world scenario using a cost comparison. Mine is,Lauren needs to find the best option for daycare for her two year old daughter to fit her budget because she works 45hrs. a week. Option 1 is a in home child care which charges a flat rate of $5 per hour for each kid. Option 2, is a daycare center and they charge a fixed rate of $100 a week and $5 for any additional hours after 45hrs. Which option would be most advantageous for Lauren if she is paying weekly or monthly.
This what I got:
Let y = total cost for childcare per week
Let x = price
Option1-
y=x(45)
y=$5(45)
y=$225 per week
$225(4)=$900 month
Option2-
y=x
y=$100 per week
$100(4)=$400 a month
If I did it correct option two would be the best option2 right?

In option #2 your equation does not include the additional
cost for the hours beyond 45.
-----
Of course she is not paying for more than 45 hours so
why do you even mention that part of the option?

Your set up and conclusions are just right. The only thing I would change is your Week-to-Month conversion factor. On average there are 4 and 1/3 weeks in a month. Divide 52 by 12 and see what I mean.

So, instead of 900 per month for option A, it would be 975, and instead of 400 per month for option B it would be $433.33. Same conclusion though.
