the total 21 cents; and you found that it costs the same amount of money to
buy 2 peppermint patties; & 1 gumdrop costs 2 cents more than a lollipop
find out the cost of each kind of candy
:
"they bought one peppermint pattie, One lollipop, and One gumdrop, the total 21 cents"
p + l + g = 21
:
"it costs the same amount of money to buy 2 peppermint patties"
2p = 21
p = 21/2
p = 10.5 for one peppermint
then
10.5 + l + g = 21
l + g = 21 - 10.5
l + g = 10.5
:
"1 gumdrop costs 2 cents more than a lollipop"
g = l + 2
-l + g = 2
:
Add the last two equations
l + g = 2
-l+ g = 10.5
------------Adding eliminates l, find g
2g = 12.5
g = 12.5/2
g = 6.25 for one gum drop
