Question 746955: How would I show the following word problem in a step by step manner as a linear equation with the given solutions that I listed below the questions?
A high school purchases two workbooks for every textbook, and two journals for every workbook. If the school purchases 701 total items, how many of each do they need?
I know the solution would be :
43 textbooks, 86 workbooks and 172 journals but how do I put these all in a linear equation and show how I got this answer?
Answer by solver91311(24713) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The school buys
textbooks, twice as many, or
workbooks, and twice that, or
journals. And it all adds up to 701.
In summary:
And just solve for
, then calculate
and
. Of course, this won't get you anywhere at all because you stated the problem incorrectly. It is not possible for the total number of items to be 701 because 701 is not divisible by 7. If, as you say, the answer is truly (43, 86, and 172), then the total number of items is 301 -- just add 43 + 86 + 172 if you don't believe me. Repost when you figure out what the problem really is.
