Answer by Cromlix(4381)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(x - 13) + x = 45
2x - 13 = 45
2x = 58
x = 29
therefore one number is 29 the other 16

Answer by davethejackal(28)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let the 2 numbers = x and y.

"one number is 13 less than the other"
so x = y-13[1]

" their sum is 45"
so x+y=45 [2]

Substitute for x in [2] using [1]
y-13+y=45
Rearranging:
2y=58

Thus y = 29.

Substituting in [1]
x = y-13 = 29-13 = 16.

Check in [2]
x+y = 29+16 = 45 QED
The 2 numbers are 16 and 29.
