Write an equation for each statement
:

a = 4b + 8
:
"If the larger is increased by four times the smaller the result is 40."
a + 4b = 40
Replace a with (4b+8) from the 1st statement
(4b+8) + 4b = 40
4b + 4b = 40 - 8
8b = 32
b = 4
