Question 718897: If someone has a bag of 45 cookies with 2 kinds inside, (some cost 3 dollars and some cost 5 dollars) how can I come up with an equation that shows how many there are of each kind?
To try and solve, I've come up with:
x=the # of 3 dollar cookies,
y=the # of 5 dollar cookies.
so 3x+5y=45 divided by something?
Thanks.

You won't be able to actually solve this one because you are missing a vital piece of information, namely the total cost of the bag of cookies.

If there are of one type of cookie and of the other type and there are a total of cookies, you can write:

And if you happened to know that the entire bag of cookies was worth total, then you could write:

then, given that you know the value of one of those variables, that is either , , or you could use the system of equations to find the value of the two variables that you don't know. But, since you can only form two equations and you need three pieces of information, you are pretty much done.
