Question 71569: Solve the following word problem. Be sure to show the equation you use for the solution and your work.
Science and medicine. Martina leaves home at 9 A.M., bicycling at a rate of 24 mi/h. Two hours later, John leaves, driving at the rate of 48 mi/h. At what time will John catch up with Martina?

Answer by galactus(183)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Use the formula d=rt.
John will catch Martina when their distances are the same.
Distance Martina travels is 24t
John's distance is 48(t-2), because he travelled 2 hours less but at a greater rate.
Distance are equal.

In 4 hours, from Martina's starting time, John will catch her.
Therefore, 9 AM + 4 hours = 1 PM
