Two isosceles triangles have the same base length. The legs of one of the triangles are twice as long as the legs of the other. Find the lengths of the sides of the triangles if their perimeters are 23cm and 41cm.
"
:
Let x = side length of the smaller triangle;
2x = side length of the larger
:
let b = base length of both triangles
:
4x + b = 41; perimeter of the larger triangle
2x + b = 23: perimeter of the smaller triangle
------------- Subtract
2x = 18 cm; side length of larger triangle
x = 9 cm; side length of the smaller
:
Find the base: 23 - 18 = 5 cm
:
Check using perimeter: 2(18) + 5 = 41; and 2(19) + 5 = 23
