Question 698625: Mr. Moseley asked the students in his Algebra class to work in groups to solve (x-3)^2=25, stating that each student in the first group to solve the equation correctly would earn five bonus points on the next quiz. Mi-Ling's group solved the equation using the Square Root Property. Emilia's group used the Quadratic Formula to fing the solutions. In which group would you prefer to be in? Explain your reasoning.

In order to solve an equation with the quadratic formula, the expression must be in the form for some values a, b, and c. So, to solve this expression with the quadratic formula, one must spend the time re-writing this equation to be in that form, then plug those numbers into a somewhat lengthy formula.

On the other hand, the equation is already set up in the form it needs to be to use the Square Root Property -- taking the square root of both sides yields (x-3) = +/- 5. Just add three to both sides and the equation is solved.

Because the equation is written in a way that makes the Square Root Property much faster and easier to use, I'd prefer to be in Mi-Ling's group.
