Apparently you are letting
represent the price of the cheaper car, which is perfecly ok. But then you say that 3 times the price of the cheaper car minus $240 is equal to $2000, which we know to be the total amount paid for BOTH cars.
3 times the price of the cheaper car minus $240 is the price of the more expensive car. The price of the more expensive car plus the price of the cheaper car is $2000, so:
