At the market i bought plums, peaches, and pears.
i bought twice as many peaches as pears and 4 1/2 times as many plums as pears. in all, i bought 45 pieces of fruit. how many of each did i buy?
:
let a = no. of plums
let b = no. of peaches
let c = no. of pears
:
Write an equation for each statement:
:
" bought twice as many peaches as pears"
b = 2c
:
" and 4 1/2 times as many plums as pears."
a = 4.5c
:
"in all, i bought 45 pieces of fruit."
a + b + c = 45
:
Replace a with 4.5c, replace b with 2c
4.5c + 2c + c = 45
7.5c = 45
c = 45/7.5
c = 6 pears
then
b = 2(6) = 12 peaches
and
a = 4.5(6) = 27 plums
:
:
Check this: 27 + 12 + 6 = 45
