Question 666153: Hi, I have a word problem in which I am to graph games played and number of home runs between two players. I know how to do the graph the plots, but don't know how to write and solve the equation for this question. Here is the question: How many home runs will each player have after 160 games and which player is likely to win the home run race? Write an equation to prove the answer. Here is the data:
Games Played and Home Runs- Player A:
20-11
40-19
60-26
80-31
100-39
120-47
140-56
160-?
Games played and Home Runs-Player B
20-7
40-14
60-23
80-29
100-38
120-48
140-55
160-?
Any help is GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks,
Missy

Choose any two records.
For Player A, let's choose the two games before our mystery record. (120,47) and (140,56)
Use the slope formula. (56-47)/(140-120) = 9 home-runs / 20 games
Now use the point-slope form.
y -y1 = m(x-x1)
y - 56 = 9/20(x-140)
y = 9/20x - 63 + 56 ---> y= 9/20x -7
Plug in f(160) = 65
160-65 record.
Try the same thing for B: (use two records, find the slope, use point slope, solve for y, plug in 160)
