Gene earned $264 last week. He worked a total of 44 hours, part at an hourly rate of $5.50 and part at an hourly rate of $8.25. How much did he earn at each rate?
Let x=number of hours at $8.25 per hour
Then 44-x=number of hours at $5.50 per hour
Now we are told that the amount earned at $8.25 ($8.25x) plus the amount earned at $5.50 ($5.50(44-x)) equals $264. So our equation to solve is:
8.25x+5.50(44-x)=264
8.25x+242-5.50x=264 collecting like terms and subtracting 242 from both sides
2.75x=264-242=22
x=8 hours at $8.25 per hour
44-x=44-8=36 hours at $5.50 per hour
ck
(8)($8.25)+(36)($5.50)=$264
66+198=264
264=264
Hope this helps---ptaylor
