Question 661038: Tickets for the homecoming dance cost $25 for a single ticket or $40 for a couple. Ticket sales totaled $2930, and 142 people attended. How many tickets of each type were sold?
Answer by ReadingBoosters(3246) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x = single
y = couple
25x + 40y = 2930
x + 2y = 142; x = 142 - 2y
Substitute
25(142 - 2y) + 40y = 2930
3550 - 50y + 40y = 2930
3550 - 10y = 2930
3550 - 2930 = 10y
620 = 10y
62 = y = couple's tickets sold
x = 142 - 2(62) = 142 - 124 = 18 single tickets
