Question 659651: One number is 3 less than twice another.The sum of the two numbers is 51. Find the numbers.
Answer by ReadingBoosters(3246) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x + y = 51
x = 2y - 3
Substitute the second equation into the first
2y - 3 + y = 51
Combine like terms
3y - 3 + 3 = 51 + 3
3y = 54
3y/3 = 54/3
y = 18
Plug y into the second equation to solve for x
x = 2(18) - 3 = 36 - 3 = 33
y = 18, x = 33
