Question 65961: The directions are use the substitution method to solve the Linear system.
The Problem is: One share of stock A is worth 3 1/2 shares of stock B. If the total value of the stock is $9,000, how much was invested in each company? The equations that I have come up wich are A=3 1/2B and A+B=9,000 i don't know what to do next or if my equations are right. If you have the time please help me figure this problem out. I've worked on it for days and i just can't get it. Thanks.

You are right on target on this one!!!!!! Good work!!!!!You have gotten past the hard part. All that's left to do is solve:
(1) A+B=9000
(2)A=(3.5)B
Substitute (2) in (1) and we have:
(3.5)B+B=9000
(4.5)B=9000
B=$2000 Total value of Stock B
Substitute B=$2000 in (1):
A=9000-2000=$7000 Total value of stock A

7000=(3.5)2000
and
7000+2000=9000
