Question 645359: Hello tutors please help me with this problem . One pipe can fill a pool 1.25 times faster than a second pipe. When both pipes are opened , they fill the pool in five hours . How long would it take to fill the pool if only the slower pipe is used ? tanx so much
Answer by nerdybill(7384)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let s = time (hours) it takes for slower pipe to fill alone
then
1.25s = time (hours) for faster pipe alone
.
5(1/s + 1/(1.25s)) = 1
multiply both sides by 1.25s to get:
5(1.25 + 1) = 1.25s
5(2.25) = 1.25s
11.25 = 1.25s
11.25/1.25 = s
9 hours = s
