Let one of the numbers be "x"; the other number is "18-x"
EQUATION:
2x=(18-x)+6
2x=24-x
3x=24
x=8 ; 18-x= 10

The difference of two postive numbers is 16. One number is 3 times the other. Find the two numbers.
Let one of the numbers be "x"; the other number is "x+16"
EQUATION:
x+16=3x
2x=16
x=8 ; x+16=24
