Question 636221: One number is three more than a second number. Forty-nine more than the product of the two numbers is 89. Find the numbers
Answer by ptaylor(2198)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x=second number
Then x+3=first number
Now our equation to solve is:
x(x+3)=89-49=40 simplify
x^2+3x-40=0 quadratic in standard form and it can be factored
(x+8)(x-5)=0
x=-8
and
x=5
CK for x=-8
(-8)(-8+3)=40
40=40
CK for x=5
5(8)=40
40=40
Both answers work
Hope this helps--ptaylor
