Twenty children were sharing equally the cost of a present for their teacher.
When four of the children decided not to contribute, each of the other children had to pay 1.50 more.
How much did the present cost, in Naira?
:
let p = cost of the present
then
= original cost per student
and
= subsequent cost per student (4 students opted out)
:
Actual cost - original cost = 1.50
- = 1.50
multiplying by 80 will get rid of the denominators
80* - 80* = 80(1.50)
cancel out the denominators and you have
5p - 4p = 120
p = $120 is the cost of the present
;
:
Check this
120/16 = 7.50
120/20 = 6.00
--------------
differ: 1.50
:
What does "in Naira" mean?
