Let y = no. of $10
Let z = no. of $20

x + y + z = 40
and the total value equation
5x + 10y + 20z = $500
Replace y with 2z
5x + 10(2z) + 20z = 500
5x + 20z + 20z = 500
5x + 40z = 500
simplify, divide by 5
x + 8z = 100
x = (100-8z)
