Question 597288: Hi, I'm studying for a midterm test for Algebra 1, and came upon a word problem that got me thinking. I normally do fine with word problems, but this one is hard for me to comprehend. Thank you so much for the help! It is truly greatly appreciated.
Word Problem:
"A jar contains a total of 50 coins, consisting of nickels and dimes. The value of all the coins in the jar is $5.25. Determine the system of equations that would be used to find the solution."
I know that there should be two equations, and that I should use elimination/substitution to solve them, but I don't know how or where to begin. Thanks again!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
"A jar contains a total of 50 coins" ___ n + d = 50

"The value of all the coins in the jar is $5.25" ___ 5n + 10d = 525
