Draw a rectangle. Draw two partially overlapping circles inside of the rectangle.
Label the rectangle R and label one of the circles P and the other Q. Then P ∩ Q is the region where the two circles overlap and P ∪ Q is the area that comprises both circles including the overlap area. Both of these regions are fully contained in the universe region, R.
