Question 557987: If the perimeter of a retanglular piece of glass is 26in and the length is 4in longer than twice the width, then what are the lenght and the width?
i've been staring at this probelm for an hour, and I just know I am missing something so obvious: here is one of the equations I have tried
L=2w+4in
P=26in
W=?
w + 2w + 4 = 26
3w + 4 = 26
-4 -4
3w = 22
/3 /3
w = 7.33 (repeating)
then I knew my equation was wrong.

I like it when you show your work like that because I can see exactly where you went wrong and get right to the heart of the matter.
Your difficulty here is that you are trying to say, with the equation
, is that the perimeter is equal to the width plus the length, when, in fact, the perimeter is TWO times the width plus TWO times the length.
So, you could have written either:
or
Either way gets you there.
If you can finish yourself from here, fine. If not, let me know.

My calculator said it, I believe it, that settles it
