Question 547674: An open box is to be constructed from a square piece of sheet metal by removing 1 ft from each corner and turning up the edges. If the box is to hold 4 cubic feet, what should the dimensions of the sheet metal?
Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let the side of the square sheet be x
1 ft cut from corners
so side = (x-2)
side = (x-2)
height =1
Volume = (x-2)(x-2)*1
4=(x-2)^2
4=x^2-4x+4
x^2-4x=0
x(x-4)=0
x=4 the eheet metal should be 4 by 4 ft
