Do it with basic math:
1240 legs is 620 pairs of legs. All 180 critters have 3 pairs of legs, which
accounts for 180×3 or 540 pairs. The remaining 620-540 or 80 pairs of legs
belong to the ticks, so there were 80 ticks and therefore 180-80 or 100
mosquitoes.
or do it with algebra:
m + t = 180
6m + 8t = 1240
Solve that and get m = 100, t = 80
