The length of a rectangle is 1cm longer than its width. if the diagonal of the rectangle is 5cm, what are the dimensions(the length and width) of the rectangle?
------------------------------
width = x cm
length = x+1 cm
Since diagonal is 5 cm x^2+(x+1)^2=5^2
x^2+x^2+2x+1=25
2x^2+2x-24=0
x^2+x-12=0
(x+4)(x-3)=0
Since x must be positive, x=3
So width = 3 cm
and length = 4 cm
