Let x ad (36-x)represent the number of girls and boyes respectively

Question states***

 2x = (36-x) + 12

Solving for x

 3x = 48

  x = 16, the number of girls.  the number of boys is 20.   (36-16)

  

CHECKING our Answer***

  32 = 20 + 12
