Jack bought $8 worth of 6-cent and 8-cent stamps numbering 110 stamps in all. How many stamps of each kind did he buy?
-----------------
Equations:
Quantity: s + e = 110
Value 6s + 8e = 800 cents
----
Multiply thru the Quantity Eq by 6
6s + 6e = 6*110
---
Subtract that from the Value Eq and solve for "e":
2e = 140
e = 70 (# of eight cent stamps)
---
Since s + e = 110, s = 110-70, s = 40 (# of 6 cent stamps)
