The difference of two numbers are 40. Six times the smaller one minus the larger one is 5. Find the larger number.
----
Equations:
x-y = 40
6y-x = 5
---------------
Rearrange:
x - y = 40
x -6y = -5
-----
Subtract the bottom eq from the top and solve for "y":
5y = 45
y = 9
-----
Substitute into x-y = 40 and solve for "x":
x - 9 = 40
x = 49
----------------
