A family has two cars. The first car has a fuel efficiency of 40 miles per gallon of gas and the second has a fuel efficiency of 35 miles per gallon of gas. During one particular week, the two cars went a combined total of 2125 miles, for a total gas consumption of 55 gallons. How many gallons were consumed by each of the two cars that week?
..
one car 40 miles /gallon
other car 35 miles/gallon
..
Total miles = 2125
gas used = 55 gallons
...
let first car drive x miles
second car drive y miles
..
x/40 + y/35 = 55
(35x+40y)/35*40 = 55
35x+40y = 55*40*35
35x+40y=77,000............................1
x+y = 2125................................2
multiply (2) by -35
-35x-35y= 2125*-35
-35x-35y=-74,375
add to (1)
5y=2625
/5
y=525 miles
average = 35
consumption = 525/35
= 15 gallons
x= 2125-525=1600 miles
first car 1600/40 = 40 gallons
