Question 3609: The cost of a taxi ride is calculated by adding a fixed amount to a charge for each 1/4 mile of the trip. If a one mile trip costs $4.00 and 1 and 1/2 mile trip cost $5.50 , what will be the costs of a 3 mile trip?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
From this problem we see that there is some initial charge (C) and some fixed amount (A) that gets added every 1/4 mile so the total cost(T) of a trip (M) miles long will be:
T=C%2BA+%284%2AM%29
Now we are given the total for Two trips one where M=1 and one where M=1.5 or 3/2.
So:
4.00=C%2BA+%284%2A1%29
and
5.50=C%2BA+%284%2A1.5%29
With two equations and two unknowns it is trivial to solve for A...
A=0.75 and C=1.00
Therefore to get the cost of a 3 mile trip we do:
T=1.00%2B0.75%2A3%2A4=$10.00
