Question 360513: a boat crew rowed 16 miles downstream with the current in 2 hours . the return trip upstream against the current covered the same distance but took 4 hours find the crews rowing rate in still water of the current.

the rate of the current is_________miles per hour

Answer by checkley77(12844)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
D=RT
16=R*2
R=16/2
R=8 MPH. WITH THE CURRENT.
16=R*4
R=16/4
R=4 MPH AGAINST THE CURRENT.
(8-4)/2=4/2=2 MPH IS THE RATE OF THE CURRENT.
8-2=6 MPH RATE OF THE BOAT IN STILL WATER.
4+2=6 MPH DITTO.
PROOF:
16=(6+2)*2
16=8*2
16=16
16=(6-2)4
16=4*4
16=16
