*Note: sum of the numbers is "72" , difference 48
.
x+y=72
y = 72-x
.
x-y =48
.
Substitute for y
x -(72-x) =48
Simplify and solve
x - 72 +x = 48
2x = 120
.
x = 60
y = 72 -60 = 12
.
check your answer
60-12 = 48
