multiplying 2nd equation by -2 ___ -8x + 2y = -22

adding to 1st equation (this eliminates the y) ___ -5x = -10

dividing by -5 ___ x = 2

substituting ___ 3(2) - 2y = 12 ___ 6 - 2y = 12

subtracting 6 ___ -2y = 6

dividing by -2 ___ y = -3
