Question 334895: this problem is giving me a headache because i don't know one part of the equation.
The owner of Nuts2U Snack Shack mixes cashews worth $6.00 a pound with peanuts worth $2.20 a pound to get a half-pound mixed nut bag worth $1.70. How much of each nut is included in the mixed bag? round answer to two decimals.
Now i understand how to set up the problem: c+p= half-pound and 6.00c + 2.20p=1.70, i just don't know what a "half-pound" is. i've tried many variations and it's driving me crazy. please help.

Let
represent the weight of the cashews in the mix. Then, since the mix weighs a half-pound, the weight of the peanuts in the mix must be
.
The cost of
pounds of cashews is
dollars and the cost of
pounds of peanuts is
dollars.
The cost of the cashews in the mix plus the cost of the peanuts in the mix equals the cost of the mix:
Solve for
to get the weight of the cashews, then subtract from 0.5 to get the weight of the peanuts.
