Let's have A represent Adults and K be kids. We'll set up 2 equations.
A+K=254
28A+12K=3864
Now we can use substitution method. Use the first equation and set it up as:
A=254-K
Plug this into the second:
28(254-K)+12K=3864
Are you with me? OK, multiply it out and combine like terms to get:
7112-16K=3864
subtract 7112 from both sides:
-16K=-3248
Divide both sides by -16 to get:
203
Now we know there were 203 kids and
51 Adults
