Question 327013: the ratio of two numbers is 5/6. the second number is 16 less than twice the first number. find both numbers
Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let first number be x
second number be y
x/y = 5/6
6x-5y=0...............1
..
y=2x-16
y-2x=-16...............2
eliminate y. multiply equation 2 by 5 and add the equations
5y-10x =-80
..
6x-5y+5y-10x=-80
-4x=-80
divide by -4
x=20
plug the value of x in equation1
6*20-5y=0
5y=120
y=24
20, 24 are the numbers
