Question 32135: Can you help clearify this for me?
When solving a linear equation in one variable, the objective is to isolate the variable on one side of the equation. What does that mean? Would you please give me an an example?
Thank you very much.

Answer by Fermat(136)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Here are two examples.
2x + 5 = 7 - 9x
add 9x to both sides,
11x + 5 = 7
subtract 5 from both sides,
11x = 2
divide both sides by 11,
x = 2/11
========

cross-multiply. Multiply the numerator on the lhs by the denominator on the rhs and multiply the numerator on the rhs by the denominator on the lhs. This gives,
3(3-2x) = 5(x+2)
multiply out the brackets,
9 - 6x = 5x + 10
add 6x to both sides,
9 = 11x + 10
subtract 10 from both sides,
-1 = 11x
rearrange the eqn,
11x = -1
divide both sides by 11,
x = -1/11
