Question 316432: A wire us stretched from the ground to the top of a pole. The wire is 34 ft long. The height of the pole is 14 ft greater than the distance d from the pole's base to the bottom of the wire. Find the distance d and the height of the pole.

Hello,
We'll use this formula to solve such: a^2+b^2=c^2 (c will represent the hypotenuse)
(d+14)^2+d^2=34^2 Expand this out to:
d^2+28d+196+d^2=1156 Rewritten as:
2d^2+196-1156=0 Take out a 2 to get:
2(d^2+14d-480)=0 Now we can factor this to get:
2(d+30)(d-16)=0 Now solve for d to get:
d=-30
d=16
The only one that makes sense is 16 feet so the pole is:
30 feet and the distance on the ground is 16 feet.
Make sense?
