"The difference between two numbers is 7" ___ L - S = 7 ___ 2L - 2S = 14

"Twice the smaller number is 4 more than the larger number" ___ 2S = L + 4

adding equations (to eliminate S) ___ 2L - 2S + 2S = 14 + L + 4 ___ L = 18

substituting ___ 2S = (18) + 4 ___ S = 11
